Did You Know...

There's lots of free information on slips and trips on the HSE Slips and Trips web site (see link below).

The HSE will also post out a very useful pack featuring posters, mapping tools, information sheets and checklists as part of their Shattered Lives Campaign.

Employers' Responsibilities

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 makes it quite clear that slip and trip risks must be controlled to ensure staff and public safety. This was bought into sharp focus during the Ellis v Bristol City Council case of June 2007 (please follow links from HSE Slips and Trips/Relevant Law). In summary, controls such as warning signs and rigorous cleaning regimes all help but a slippy floor is a slippy floor. Even if there are relatively few incidents (in this case there were three in three years) action should have been taken to make the floor safe.

With fast track claims in the region of £20-25k* it makes economic sense to to deal with potential problems.

Pendulum Testing

The British Pendulum Tester is the only standard recognised by the HSE in regards to slippy surfaces. Readings taken before and after any treatment would prove very useful evidence in the case of any subsequent claim. Please ask for a quote for this work.
